Mochi donut recipe

Mochi donuts combine the chewy texture of traditional Japanese mochi with the sweet, fluffy qualities of classic American donuts. Made using glutinous rice flour, these treats offer a unique, slightly sticky bite that’s fun to make and delicious to enjoy.

Whether you already love mochi or want to try a creative spin on donuts, this recipe will show you how to make soft, chewy mochi donuts at home. They work great for breakfast, snacks, or dessert and can be customized with your favorite glazes and toppings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup glutinous rice flour (mochiko)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the glaze (optional):

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together glutinous rice flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, combine milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well mixed.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until you get a smooth batter. The batter will be thicker than regular cake batter.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  5. To form the donuts, fill a piping bag or a resealable plastic bag with the batter, cutting off one corner. Pipe eight small circles connected in a ring shape onto parchment paper.
  6. Carefully transfer the shaped donuts into the hot oil. Fry them for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels.
  8. If you want to add glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip the cooled donuts in the glaze and place them on a wire rack to set.
