Description

General Tso Chicken is a crispy fried chicken dish coated in a tangy, sweet, and mildly spicy sauce. This homemade version is perfect for recreating the popular Chinese-American takeout classic with balanced flavors and a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry)

  • 1/2 cup chicken broth or water

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tbsp minced ginger

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

Garnish

  • Sliced green onions

  • Toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Pat chicken dry. Dip in beaten eggs, then coat with cornstarch.

  2. Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry chicken in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

  3. Whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, chicken broth, and sesame oil.

  4. In a clean skillet, sauté garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes until fragrant.

  5. Add sauce mixture to skillet; bring to simmer. Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened.

  6. Toss fried chicken in sauce until evenly coated.

  7. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot.
